Meet Monique

Monique Alcala knows how to win. She’s a 15 year veteran of competitive campaigns from across the country. She pushed to reform, modernize, and professionalize the Texas Democratic Party as executive director. Now she's running to continue that work as Chair; to restore trust, build a culture of winning, and support candidates, elected officials, county parties, local clubs and volunteers and make us the most important state party in the country.

Monique Alcala is a native Texan, single mom, dog mom, runner, and sci-fi nerd...

Monique has never backed down from a fight. Now she is bringing her passion for representative democracy and her professional experience to the race for the Texas Democratic Party Chair.

Born in Austin, Monique spent most of her life growing up in Buda, Texas. It was here where her grandmother, Helen Alcala, established the first Hispanic woman-owned/first Mexican restaurant in the town in 1980. Helen and her son, Rene Alcala, who took over the business after her passing in 2017, were committed to creating an atmosphere at the restaurant that was welcoming to generations of local Texans.

Monique’s grandmother and father taught her that when you care about the people you serve, you can leave an indelible mark on people’s lives. This ethos has driven Monique’s 15 year career in politics and advocacy. She has worked on races across the country with candidates running for Congress, Governor, the United States Senate, state legislature, Mayor, President of the United States and more. Monique Alcala knows how to win. Throughout her career, including her time at EMILYs List, the nation's largest resource dedicated to electing Democratic pro-choice women to office, she has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to recruiting, training, and supporting pro-choice Democrats up and down the ballot.

After her father’s passing in 2022, she wanted to honor the role he played in her career by focusing on Texas - - the state he loved and wanted to see change. As Executive Director of the TDP, Monique launched the first modern and professionalized Texas statewide coordinated campaign in more than a generation. And she raised millions of dollars to support Democratic campaigns and infrastructure at the State Party.

Monique is running for Chair of the Texas Democratic Party to build a culture of winning, to restore the TDP as a trusted and effective partner for candidates at every level of the ballot, and to support the clubs, volunteers, and county party infrastructure that are at the very heart of the TDP.

A collage of three images: a child's drawing with a red heart and two stick figures, the phrase 'I Love my Mama!', and a girl sitting on steps wearing a yellow graduation stole with 'TEXAS' written on it, smiling and making a rock hand gesture. She has long dark hair, hoop earrings, and a gold necklace. The third image shows two dogs in a pet carrier, one with brown fur and the other with tan and white fur.

What People Say About Monique

I don’t know anyone quite like Monique. She’s that leader. The one who takes on tough work, builds bridges, doesn’t back down, fights for all people, and always has her compass pointed toward the future. There’s never doubt where she stands and never a doubt she’ll get the job done. There’s no one I’d rather have more in the room and at the table and on the front lines. She’s a Texas woman, through and through.
— Charlotte Clymer, Writer, Activist, Veteran, and Native Texan
As far back as I can remember, my mom has always taken on the toughest battles. I know she will fight for Texas Democrats as hard as she has fought for our family.
— Kyla D., Monique's Daughter/UT Longhorn
Monique is the person you call when you need real results, not excuses. She’s fearless, sharp as hell, and never backs down when it’s time to fight for what’s right. If I’m building a team that actually gets things done, Monique’s name is at the top of the list—every single time.
— Hon. Hala Ayala, Former Virginia Delegate & Democratic Nominee for Lt Governor
